Children of the Corn and Beetles of the Dresser

Beetles of the Dresser

The world of pest control is full of funny stories. Here’s one of the funniest stories we’ve heard in a long time. Be careful where you store your corn hole game. In the pest control industry, technicians see a lot of things. Things that amaze them. Things that make sense. Things that are weird. And lots of things that are funny.

I’m Lindsay. I’ll be your narrator today. I’m the narrator of this blog most days, actually.

As an office worker at a pest control company, I hear a lot of things, especially funny stories from technicians. Allow me to share this with you because this story is too good to keep to myself.

Once upon a time, not too long ago, a jolly technician made his way to a routine pest control service call. The customer was seeing grain beetles upstairs in their house, so The Bug Man came out to take a look.

The thing about grain beetles is they are usually found in the kitchen. It was strange that someone would see a multitude of grain beetles any place other than where food is stored.

Upon the technician’s arrival, he greeted the perplexed customer and did a little investigating to try to find the root of the problem.

He asked, “I know this is a strange question, but do you have any corn anywhere in this house?”

“No. No corn,” the customer replied.

So the technician kept looking. As the minutes ticked on, he began questioning his own ability as a pest control professional.

“Have I lost my edge?” he wondered. “What am I going to tell this lady?”

The technician imagined his response to the customer.

“Uh, sorry, ma’am. I have no idea where all of these beetles are coming from. Crazy weather these days. It must be bringing in strange bug activity.”

Jolting him out of his inner dialogue, the customer said, “Oh! Hey, I’ve got corn hole bags in my dresser upstairs…”

Renewed in his pest control vigor, the technician booked it upstairs and opened the door of the dresser to find thousands of grain beetles swarming the corn hole bags. In his astonishment, he completely forgot to take a picture of the discovery.

Infestation by corn hole bag. Incredible!

So what’s the moral of the story? Don’t store corn hole bags in your dresser upstairs!

So who wants to play corn hole? Anyone? Anyone?

Shameless Plug: Calling the Exterminator Isn’t a Bad Thing

Calling the Exterminator Isn't a Bad Thing

Are you ashamed to call The Bug Man? We don’t think it’s shameful that you need our help. We’re proud of you for calling us and letting us help protect your family.

Customers are interesting.

Some of them rave about pest control.
“Now, honey, let me tell ya. I love your mosquito service. I can sit in my yard all day and not get a single bite. But my friend, Jeannie. Now she’s always gettin’ bit up real bad. But I’m not, cuz y’all come out here and spray my property and you do a real good job.”

Some of them have a lot of questions about pest control.
“So is your termite service separate from your pest control? Or is it all bundled together? What if I need one and not the other? Can I do that? Is that ok? How much does that cost?”

And, still, there are other customers who call us, with what sounds like a sense of shame.
“Uh. Hi. My name is_________. Um. *nervous laughter* I’ve…*clears throat* I’ve never called an exterminator before. *sigh* Wh-wh-wha-how, uh, how much does it cost to get rid of bugs? I’ve got mice. And I have seen a few spiders. And I really don’t like bugs. I’m sorry, I’m not sure what to ask you. I’ve never needed an exterminator before…”

We named this post “Shameless Plug” because we want you to feel shameless when you call us.

Rest easy, folks. It is ok to call the exterminator. It’s not a shameful thing to call The Bug Man. We don’t think you’re grimy and gross when you call us. Pretty much every homeowner has an encounter with bugs.

When you ask us to come treat your home, we don’t assume that it’s your fault that you’ve got bugs. We don’t imagine your home as a rickety shack destined to be featured on the show Hoarders.

Rather, we imagine you as a friendly Middle Tennessean. We envision you as a homeowner in Murfreesboro who wants to be educated on the best practices for keeping pests out. We think you’re a good mom or dad in Lebanon who wants to protect your family by keeping your home pest free.

Don’t be ashamed to call us, because we’re not ashamed of you. We are proud of you for taking care of your loved ones. And we’re honored that you let us help you do that.

Mice in the Movies: Vile Vermin Became Furry Friends

Vile Vermin Became Furry Friends

Disney casts a lot of rodents as characters in their movies. We highlight a few of the fabled characters in our latest blog. Leave us a comment if we forgot one. It’s been rodent season for awhile. And it’s still rodent season today! Mice are still on the move. Rats are still on the run.

The RescuersWith mice on our minds for the last several months, we’ve had time to ruminate on just how many rodents show up in movies. Especially Disney movies! Let’s see. We’ve got The Rescuers. The crew of helpful mice in Cinderella. Then Ratatouille. And there are probably more that we’re missing. (Leave a comment below if we forgot a movie.)

Update: We forgot Mickey and Minnie! Thanks to those who left a comment.

In those fabled films, the rodents are the heroes! They are celebrated and cheered on! Humans are sometimes painted as antagonists. Movie-watchers can find themselves hoping that the human is defeated and the rodent rallies for a win.

How funny that rodents are usually jeered in reality. With all of the lovable Disney rodent characters out there, it leaves us wondering if people feel a sense of guilt or sadness when trying to keep rodents out of their homes.

Do you feel like you’re denying a proverbial Gus-Gus a chance at life if you call The Bug Man? Are you breaking up the storied romance of Bernard and Miss Bianca if you tell us you need a service call for mice? And what about poor Remy the rat? Is he helping you cook your family feast?

If you’re not fond of rodents in your house, give us a call at 615.217.7284. We will help you have a happily ever after.

Home for the Holidays: Protect Your Nest From the Pests

Protect Your Nest From the Pests

As you celebrate this Christmas season, we hope your home is free of any pesky outside nuisances. However, if you find yourself in a bitter battle with pests, give us a call, and we’ll be on our way.

There’s no place like home for the holidays…

For some reason, the combination of the holiday season and the gathering of friends and family leads to humorous situations. Countless movies are based on holiday hilarity. Family traditions include watching some of those movies.

One such movie marvel is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. There’s the Christmas tree, the sled on the hill, the Christmas lights, cousin Eddie, the Christmas bonus, and…the squirrel.

Crazy things can happen when outside pests invade your cozy nest! Although The Bug Man doesn’t directly deal with squirrels, we do come to your defense when it comes to pests like spiders, ants, rodents, silverfish, termites, mosquitoes, and fleas.

As you celebrate this Christmas season, we hope your home is free of any pesky outside nuisances. However, if you find yourself in a bitter battle with pests, give us a call, and we’ll be on our way.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

An Open Letter to Traveling Musicians

An Open Letter to Traveling Musicians

Lindsay–our social media gal and former member of the Christian publishing arena–shares her cares and concerns for traveling musicians. Why? Bed bugs. That’s why.

Although musicians live lives of notoriety, that does not make them immune to the threat of bed bugs. Those hitchhiking bloodsuckers show no favoritism. They don’t care who you are or what you do or how many albums you sold.

In the last week, two of the artists I follow on Twitter sent a tweet about bed bugs. At first, I felt sorry for them. Bed bugs are annoying. They can lead to panic and hysteria. And the marks of their meals leave welts on the humans on whom they feast.

Soon, my feeling of sympathy was replaced with a rising sense of duty to tell the rest of the music world about bed bugs.

You see, I used to work in the Christian publishing industry. That’s actually the reason I moved to Nashvegas. I’ve met a lot of popular artists. I reviewed their CDs and attended their shows. I cared–and still do care–about them.

Without further adieu, here are my recommendations as a music lover and pest control professional:

* Each manager, publicist, and booking agent should explicitly explain the threat of bed bugs to their artists. Perhaps–between all the parties involved–the severity of the message will be conveyed. It may seem ridiculous to do that, but the threat of bed bugs is real!

* Update your tour rider. Specifically request that all of your accommodations are bed bug-free. Seriously.

* Designate a personal assistant or crew member to check for signs of bed bugs at each venue. This includes rented transportation, green rooms, and especially hotels. Instruct one of the members of your crew to check for bed bugs before you unpack your clothing. For tips on what to look for, read our blog Snug as a Bed Bug in a Rug: Tips for Dealing with Bed Bugs.

* If you discover bed bugs in a hotel room, request a room that does not neighbor the original room. And try to move to a different floor. If one room has bed bugs, they can travel through the wall outlets to neighboring rooms.

* When traveling, never store your suitcase on a couch, bed, or the floor. Place the suitcase on a table or on one of the pop-up suitcase holders usually available in hotel rooms.

* When you get home from tour, immediately wash all of your clothing! Often the heat of the washing/drying process will kill any bugs that are present.

* Tell other artists about the threat of bed bugs. This is a story worth swapping. You may save your fellow traveler some serious coin by informing them.

* If you discover bed bugs in your home, call a pest management professional. I’m not saying this because I work for a pest control company and I want you to call us. I’m saying this because I love you and I’ve read too many articles about DIY bed bug treatments gone bad.

* If you need more information on this subject, post a comment or call us at 615-217-7284. We will gladly teach you what to look for when you’re traveling. We can tell you all about the signs of bed bugs.

We’d love to discuss this with you and offer any educational resources you may need. If you live in the Nashville area, we may even be able to arrange a meeting with artists, record labels, managers, booking agents, etc. And if we’re feeling really ambitious, perhaps a seminar at GMA Week.

If you’re still reading and you are or you’re associated with a  country/rock/alternative/emo/punk/screamo/metal/kidz bop/opera/etc. music star, I also care about you. This blog’s for you, too.

It’s also for movie stars. Or TV stars.

Or anyone. Any human. Benefits to all! 🙂

Rats! I’ve got mice! Tips and Tricks for Keeping Rodents Out of Your Home

Tips and Tricks for Keeping Rodents Out of Your Home

Rodents are rapidly running inside homes this holiday season. Check out our blog for tips and tricks on how to keep them out. Baby, it’s cold outside. And, just in time for your holiday gatherings, rodents are moving inside your home to steal a meal.

To rodent-proof your home, here are a few tips and tricks:

  1. Thoroughly examine the exterior of your home. If there’s a hole larger than a quarter or a dime, then a rodent can get through it. If a rodent’s nose fits through the hole, then their entire body can fit through, too. Check the area around pipes, heating/cooling hoses, etc., etc.
  2. Use steel wool and/or caulk to seal up any holes you may find.
  3. Remove any vines hanging down the side of your home, because rodents can use those to climb up to your roof and potentially get inside.
  4. If your doors and windows have gaps, seal them. Not only will this help keep pests out, but it will also keep you cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. #winning
  5. Trouble with rodents? We would be more than delighted to help you. Call us at 615.217.7284 to schedule an appointment.

We’re on Twitter, Google+, and Facebook. Introduce yourself, we’d love to meet you.

Why do I still see bugs after The Bug Man treats my home

Why do I still see bugs

Pest control is a sophisticated science. Using fun examples from Nintendo’s Mario Kart, learn about the reason we’re able to offer a warranty on our services.

Attention Homeowners Hosting for the Holidays:
If you’re noticing the beginning of an ant invasion, please call us as soon as possible so our products have time to take full effect. Because of the biology of ants, it may take a few days for their invasive colony to be wiped out. Please, read on for more…

King BooBugs are bootastic! You don’t want them in your house, but they show up anyway. You call The Bug Man, but sometimes the bugs still remain after a few days, even after a treatment is done. What gives?

Biology. It’s all about biology.

Believe it or not, pest control is a sophisticated science. Products are created to fulfill different purposes. Some products kill things immediately but don’t last very long. Other products take longer to eliminate the bugs, yet last a long time. And, still others use a combination.

Toad

To illustrate–and have some fun–let’s think of this in terms of Mario Kart.   Yes, Mario Kart.

Some products work like Toad. They take off almost instantly. Others work like Donkey Kong. It takes a bit to get that fella going, but once he’s moving, it’s hard to stop him.

When it comes to killing ants and termites, we use products that have a high residual and a transfer effect. Translation: We use products that are going to last a while, and will kill the pests over time. The ants and termites walk through the products or eat the bait, and then they transfer the poison to their colonies. Then they will die off gradually. That’s how we’re able to offer you a warranty.

This high residual and transfer effect explains why you may still see ants in your kitchen up to 10 days after we came out to your house. It’s not that what we did in treating your house failed. It’s just that the product is rollin’ around your house like Donkey Kong, bustin’ upon those pests!

If you still see a lot of pest activity 10 days after we’ve treated your home, please give us a call at 615.217.7284. We’re pleased as Punch Brothers to come back and scope out the situation. Our One-Time Pest Control comes with a 45-day re-treatment guarantee. And our Quarterly Pest Control service is guaranteed in-between visits.
