What attracts mice?

Like most pests, mice and rats are drawn to three things that are readily available right inside your home: food, shelter, and warmth. With access to these, you can be sure rodents will gladly make their way inside and stay there for as long as possible. The key to preventing rodents is to limit the things that attract them in the first place. Here’s how:

Like most pests living in Central TN, mice and rats are drawn to three things that your home can provide: food, warmth, and shelter. If they’re able to access these things, rodents will stay as long as they can and even make nests to make themselves at home. The key to preventing rodent infestations is to make sure they don’t have access to the things that attract them to begin with. Here’s how you can do this:

  1. Prevent access to the inside of your home.
  2. Declutter to prevent areas that could host nests.
  3. Clean up spills promptly and seal your trash.
  4. Regularly check around for signs of rodents.

How do Rats Get Inside Buildings?

The best way to keep mice and rats outside is to find the ways that they’re getting in and close them off. Rodents are notorious for their ability to squeeze through tiny cracks and gaps. Small house mice can fit into 5 mm wide holes, so any small crack is a vulnerability. Rats are known to climb trees and other structures to access the roof and get inside from above. They look for soffits, vents, chimneys, and other openings that are at least half an inch wide. Other rats, like the Norway rat, will burrow underneath your home to find access points.

What Do Mice and Rats Eat?

Rodents aren’t picky. They’re scavengers and will eat nearly any food they find. If you have crumbs in your kitchen or unsealed garbage cans in your garage, you are effectively inviting rodents in for a snack. These are the foods that rats and mice are most fond of:

  1. Rats: Rats are bigger, hungrier, and less picky than mice. They’ll eat almost anything, but prefer meats, pet food, cheese, and nuts.
  2. Mice: Mice are technically omnivores, but they usually eat grains, vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts, and more.
