Are Mosquitoes Attracted To Light in Central Tennessee
Serving Central Tennessee
Mosquitoes are not attracted to light like moths. In fact, mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn, which is when sunlight is low.
Mosquitoes do not see light the same way we do. They typically navigate by using natural light from the moon and stars. Artificial lights can be a natural deterrent to mosquitoes who may be disoriented by lights near our homes.
Many store-bought insect traps contain a light source that supposedly draws insects toward them. It’s important to know that these traps have no effect on mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not attracted to ultraviolet or LED light any more than they are to normal lights. LEDs in particular put off less warmth than other bulbs, making them even less attractive.

One proven way to repel mosquitoes is by wearing brightly colored clothing.
This is because wearing darker clothing traps heat in your body, resulting in more output of your natural scent. Wearing white, khaki, or white-colored clothing deters mosquitoes by keeping you cool and reflecting sunlight away.
While light can help with some types of insects, light neither deters nor attracts mosquitoes. You can, however, limit your exposure to mosquitoes by staying indoors during the low-light dawn and dusk hours that these pests prefer. Regular mosquito control treatments can also drastically decrease mosquito populations on your property.
